Lauriston Avery - New Paintings, New paintings by Lauriston Avery. His bold and mysterious works explore concepts, fascinations and philosophies of supra-natural and phenomenological sublimity. Probing the boundaries where abstraction, formalism, chance and non-specific narrative invoke and conjure the realms of little black holes, Avery's work is like a sort of monastic journey with goals that seek to understand age-old collective mysteries and specifically, the rumination of the beginning and the end of our ego's existence. 6/26-7/31.

Jonah Koppel: Modern Art. Jonah Koppel makes pattern-based paintings that ride a thin line between decoration and abstraction. The paintings are literally cut from a larger cloth, with an all-over treatment that could potentially continue infinitely without repeat. The patterns are placed on the stretchers arbitrarily; the unrelenting consistency of painted strokes makes no adjustments as it wraps around the sides of the painting. Individual marks dissolve into a generalized surface through the layering of colors, lines, and dots, until the lines lose their beginning and end, and the dots cannot be differentiated from one another. June 12 through July 26.

Syn-Chronic, Kim Brickley. The tension between the natural and unnatural is a consistent thread in much of what Brickley makes, especially the space where the two overlap; as well as how this overlap and tension influence our self-perception. The spaces in this work could be seen as systemic portraits, with the aim of examining the incomprehensibility of existence through scanned medical imaging, biochemical reaction, and psychological space. Sommerherz/Glass Pyrographs, In Thelka Ehling's series "Sommerherz" (Summer Hearts), the viewer is whisked back to a time in one's childhood where the lazy days of Summer seem to never end. The emotions and experiences captured by Ehling's camera are however, not of a picture perfect family vacation, but of lives being lived, thoughts being examined and a world being experienced. It is perhaps the melancholy way of saying this that best captures the tone of the atmosphere prevalent in Summer Heart. Also on exhibition: Etsuko Ichikawa,Glass Pyrographs:With a blaze of fire and smoke, Ichikawa applies a methodically shaped piece of molten glass directly to heavy stock paper. Her large scale "Glass Pyrographs" carry the action of painting, as she works her paper surface from all angles, allowing the molten glass to burn into her medium. June 12- July 11.

Art in Changing Perspecitves: BWAC's Summer Pier Show, BWAC opens the 19th century iron gates of its historic Red Hook waterfront gallery on July 11th to exhibit 800+ new works in every medium, many that interpret and reveal the world in novel and experimental ways. Among the 220+ artists represented, four very talented artists are featured. Known for her bold use of materials, masterful brushwork, and broad range of style and subject, Audrey Anastasi's paintings capture the soul and essence of their subjects. In keeping with the show's theme, Joseph Anastasi (Audrey's husband) debuts his dramatic, grand scale presentation of photographic images, which definitely offer an altered perspective. David DiPasquale will be exhibiting his seven painting series titled, The Octave Cycle, based on the concept of the celestial octave or the "music of the spheres". And though you have seen a thousand photographs of the Brooklyn Bridge, Arden Suydam's photographs and perspective are truly unique. July 11 - Aug. 16.
