Entropology: Man's Devolution, Featuring John Breiner and Max Greis. Entropology provokes us to analyze our own history-- the old vs. the new: where we are, where we come from and where we're going; to explore changes in time and history; how we've effected the world in our destruction of nature and creation of new technology. Through recycled materials, old-fashioned transfer techniques, collage, paint and other modern elements, Breiner and Greis convey imagery of impending doom with their pseudo-surrealist style and convulsive beauty. January 15- February 12.

The Gentrification of Brooklyn: The Pink Elephant Speaks, The group exhibition presents the provocative work of contemporary, urban artists in Brooklyn who have been directly affected by either gentrification, extreme real estate development, eminent domain, and/or class issues related to income and housing. The exhibition was conceived as an opportunity for the community of Brooklyn to move past its discomfort of dealing with public discourse about gentrification, which inevitably leads to discussions of race, class and discrimination. Curated by Dexter Wimberly. The “set it off” reception will feature a musical set by Brooklyn-based author and DJ, Rich Burroughs.

“Me and You and You and Me,” Featuring the work of Rylee Eterginoso and feistberger. Rylee Eterginoso will exhibit her ongoing conceptual and participatory work, “The Breakup Project.” The artist asks the public to examine the toxic relationships they have with other people, objects, habits, etc. She then asks participants to, in an act of catharsis, end these relationships via letter. Selected submissions will be on view as well as a letter writing station. feistberger presents “U|S” - the story of a relationship told through material evidence. Erica Freyberger and Patrick Feist archive the evidence of their (un)finished relationship, resulting in an installation of hundreds of scraps, keepsakes and souvenirs. “U|S” exists as a time capsule to a come-and-go romance that can only be described as complicated. Fairlane Marauder, In a group of new work situated between painting and sculpture entitled: "Fairlane Marauder" the artist John Coburn has produced a series of curiously shaped panel pieces the tones and finish of which resemble mass produced objects. The design language of things as diverse as automobiles, weaponry, electric guitars and heraldic shields is evoked in these works which reflect the playful menace of a culture that has imbued the objects of its daily peacetime consumption with a marshal spirit. Jan. 3-Feb. 8.

AKIYUKI INA: EMITTING EVANESCENT BEAUTYDue to the mortgage crisis of 2007, there is a preponderance of buildings whose construction has been indefinitely halted. Inspired by these ghostly structures, Ina has created an installation at OPEN SOURCE GALLERY that communicates his admiration for the strange beauty and evanescent nature of this unfolding process. These works utilize elements such as safety net coverings and lighted panels to recreate the fleeting clarity of these abandoned "monuments". Feb. 16th-Mar. 6th

Reprinted 19th century news articles will demonstrate the area’s long history as a community bone of contention, and a library of Gowanus-related books will explore the area’s history and its role as a muse to novelists, poets and memoirists.
